Characterization of Biobased Polyurethane Foams Employing Lignin Fractionated from Microwave Liquefied Switchgrass

چکیده
Lignin samples fractionated frommicrowave liquefied switchgrass were applied in the preparation of semirigid polyurethane (PU) foamswithout purification.Theobjective of this studywas to elucidate the influence of lignin in the PUmatrix on themorphological, chemical, mechanical, and thermal properties of the PU foams. The scanning electronmicroscopy (SEM) images revealed that lignin with 5 and 10% content in the PU foams did not influence the cell shape and size. The foam cell size became larger by increasing the lignin content to 15%. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) indicated that chemical interactions occurred between the lignin hydroxyl and isocyanate revealing that lignin was well dispersed in the matrix materials. The apparent density of the foamwith 10% lignin increased by 14.2% compared to the control, while the foamwith 15% lignin had a decreased apparent density. The effect of lignin content on the mechanical properties was similar to that on apparent density. The lignin containing foams were muchmore thermally stable than the control foam as evidenced by having higher initial decomposition temperature andmaximum decomposition rate temperature from the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) profiles.

متن کاملProducing Lignin-Based Polyols through Microwave-Assisted Liquefaction for Rigid Polyurethane Foam Production
Lignin-based polyols were synthesized through microwave-assisted liquefaction under different microwave heating times (5-30 min). The liquefaction reactions were carried out using polyethylene glycol (PEG-400)/glycerol as liquefying solvents and 97 wt% sulfur acid as a catalyst at 140 °C. The polyols obtained were analyzed for their yield, composition and structural characteristics using gel pe...

Bagasse flour (BF) was liquefied using bi-component polyhydric alcohol (PA) as a solvent and phosphoric acid as a catalyst in a microwave reactor. The effect of BF to solvent ratio and reaction temperatures on the liquefaction extent and characteristics of liquefied products were evaluated. The results revealed that almost 75% of the raw bagasse was converted into liquid products within 9 min a...
متن کاملPhysicochemical characterization of lignin recovered from microwaveassisted delignified lignocellulosic biomass for use in biobased materials
Lignocellulosic biomass (Moso Bamboo, Chinese tallow tree wood, switchgrass, and pine wood) was subjected to a novel delignification process using microwave energy in a binary glycerol/methanol solvent. The physicochemical properties of the recovered lignin were analyzed prior to its application in the fabrication of polylactic acid (PLA)–lignin composites. The results showed that the samples h...
